This play marks how hard the passage was for all of us.

My Quaker ancestors would say to me, "This play speaks to your condition."

Thomas Hardy said, "If a way to the Better there be, it exacts a full look at the Worst." There are certain couples in literature, on stage or screen that give you those "aww" moments when they connect, and I found Al and Juliana to be one of these couples. The historical setting is magical, because of Al's innocence and awe that anything like she was feeling existed. Unless someone was raised Amish--in a remote place--it would be hard to find someone today who wouldn't have at least heard of same sex attraction, even if they neither understood nor approved of it.

Although I'm not offended by sexual content in books, plays or movies, I'm not particularly interested in it either, because the creators of stories have a hard time getting it right. I can't speak for all women, but I find that usually find a little goes a long way. After a while, I just want them to finish, and get on to the rest of the story. Or, if I'm watching something play out before me, I wonder if real people are have the flexibility and stamina as the ones on screen.

With Juliana, I felt that Vandra managed to bring you into the moment, give you the images, the emotions, and the sensations, without the clinical details that read more like a "how to" manual than a story. I was really impressed that Al and Juliana affected me so much, because although I would completely support two women together, I wouldn't normally find their physical relationship to be of erotic interest. Yet Vanda's light touch and compelling narrative brought me in, and would probably do the same for a number of other readers who wouldn't normally be drawn to something labeled as "gay fiction."

I don't specifically remember being exasperated with Al's attempts to distance herself from "one of them," but I'll have to go flip through my copy, and look at some of the instances. I probably did feel that way at times, because I've encountered that with people I know. Sometimes I listen indulgently, thinking of them as toddlers, who will eventually get the hang of walking. And sometimes they annoy the hell out of me, and make me want to point out that no matter how different they are from "those people," when the lights are out, they're still doing the same things. Or wanting to do them. I'm somewhat tolerant, because of laughing through "The Best Little Boy in the World's" evolution, from feeling that dancing with men would somehow make him unmanly, to realizing that he was gay, and standing at the edge of the dance floor bobbing around wasn't going to make him any less gay, so he might as well dance.

I was involved with a college GSA, and I watched the evolution of many young people, from "being gay is wrong, and I can't do this or that, because people might think I'm gay," to seeing them manning a booth at NJ Pride. So I've learned to observe with some tolerance. But my tolerance ends, and I deliver a sharp (virtual) smack on the snout, when I hear anyone belittle people who embody the stereotypes, and I point out that what progress that has been made started with other people who were exactly like this. Dismissing them, is the equivalent of #45 saying that he likes people who weren't captured. And if I could have delivered a non-virtual smack on the snout to him, I would have done so with gusto.

Anyway, despite the length of this, just wanted to shout out to a fellow Juliana follower. I was at the last reading, recorded the show, and took a number of photos. I have no doubt I have a picture of you somewhere. kayo56https://www.blogger.com/profile/06465209846180281823noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7005388052792414355.post-14006958181291601882016-10-19T06:58:30.746-07:002016-10-19T06:58:30.746-07:00Yes I did and loved it.
